My Experience
I am a full time practicing AP/CP pathologist in a community hospital setting with a very active cancer center and our own independent AP/cytology lab. I see and confront the issues facing pathologists all around the country every day.
The issues can vary based on practice setting, and I have experience within both community hospital and independent lab settings. On the community hospital reimbursement side, these include negotiating for Part A, professional component of clinical lab testing, and professional component billing of AP services. I work with the cancer center and hospital lab to ensure appropriate molecular testing that will not break the hospital. As Chair of the Pathology Department and Blood Utilization Committee, I am constantly working with administration and physician colleagues to improve patient outcomes and decrease costs. As President of our independent lab, I have had to deal with the effects of decreasing Medicare reimbursement associated with PAMA, problems with new laboratory benefit manager programs (Avalon and Beacon), local coverage determination (LCD) issues with our Medicare intermediary (Palmetto), dealing with hospital systems as they attempt to push us out of the market, and all of the other “generic” issues with running an independent lab.
I have broad experience in every area of the CAP’s business, as highlighted in the bullet points above. I have spent multiple years with councils and/or committees within the areas of Scientific Affairs, Accreditation, Membership and Professional Development, and Government and Professional Affairs. In the area of Education, I have developed numerous educational programs (annual meetings, boot camps, webinars, etc.) for the American Pathology Foundation (APF) and state medical societies. I was also part of the team that developed the Lab Management University for the APF/ASCP. I have been involved with the IT side of the CAP since the beginning of the Web Engagement Steering Committee to improve the website for members and customers. I saw an opportunity to rethink conference calls and pushed to look at video conferencing options in early 2019. My passion was rewarded by making me lead the process as Chair of the Collaboration workgroup of the Information Technology Leadership Committee. Our group was working toward incorporating video conferencing into the CAP six months before the pandemic hit the U.S. This head start allowed us to move more quickly when the pandemic hit, as we had just finished the evaluation process and chosen Zoom as the best option.
As you can see, all those years of practice experience, coupled with my extensive experience with the CAP and organized medicine, give me a strong background to represent pathologists through the CAP. My business experience and MBA give me the right background to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of a $250 million company that will need to be innovative to differentiate it from competitors. Proficiency Testing and Accreditation programs represent the vast majority of the CAP’s income. Protecting and growing that business in an increasingly competitive environment is paramount to the success of the organization. I believe my record shows that I am a leader who delivers results that will further pathologists, pathology and the CAP.
